The Wedding Dress: Look Gorgeous Without Breaking the Bank

After the initial shock and overwhelming joy of He actually asked me to marry him! passes, what is the first thought on almost every bride-to-be’s mind?
The wedding dress. Well, at least it was on mine.
And with thousands of styles – and new trends emerging daily – how is a girl to pick her dream dress without bankrupting the rest of her wedding budget? It's going to take some research, resolve, and a whole lot of patience.
Research. Let the fun begin. You finally get to go to the store and buy those wedding magazines you’ve been ogling! Go do it! Since the top designers will advertise in many of the major magazines, you won’t need to buy too many; so save yourself a few bucks and only buy a few. Make sure to preview them in the store to make sure they’re heavily laden with wedding dress ads. Also, many websites are free to visit and do a fantastic job of covering wedding dress styles and trends.
Resolve. You have to stick to your guns here. I would’ve given just about anything to wear one of those ethereal Demetrios gowns – but I obviously didn’t since we actually afforded to get married! Those magazines you picked up are going to tempt you with every designer choice out there, but you have to plant your feet firmly on the ground and resolve to use those ideas as a guideline to help you find your style. There are so many beautiful dresses out there that are made to reflect the overall trends you’ll find in the wedding magazines. So hang in there. You can do it. Remember, the goal is to marry your man - not spend a fortune on a dress.
Patience. You’ll need a lot of this. I didn’t try on an overwhelming number of dresses, but I remember being notably frustrated thinking that I’d not find “the one” in my price range. Guess what: I did! Try large stores, chains, small stores, and boutiques. Or, if you or a relative is especially gifted, try a thrift store or fabric store. You can find some beautiful designer patterns at fabric stores and may even be able to find a vintage dress with good potential at a thrift store, then modify and modernize it to your taste. Options are endless. You just have to be patient and determined to find the one that will work for you.
Most of all, enjoy your search. There's something exhilarating about finding a gorgeous wedding dress and being able to revel in the accomplishment of spending less than some girls do on their prom dress. Me? I found what I thought was a timeless classic - and for about $300. See? Six years later and I'm still proud! Have fun and good luck!
My husband and me. I chose a simple strapless style with a fuller skirt - but not too full. And the clincher for me was a the small detail of a sash around the waist with a pretty brooch. You can't see it here, but there's a better picture of it later.
The girls. We were so lucky to have such a wonderfully helpful, loving and fun wedding party! Not to mention gorgeous, girls!
Not too flattering a picture, but you can see the detail of the dress - and a little fun, too.
Our whole wedding party. Handsome as can be.
